LG G5 vs Samsung Galaxy S7: Battle of the Flagships

With the LG G5 coming out this week and the Samsung Galaxy S7 taking the market by storm we take a detailed look at how the two compare.

1. Design:

Samsung have upped their game in regards to overall design, thanks to the curved screen, tapered back and the return of the microSD slot providing a chic yet practical feel.

Nevertheless the combination of a  metal unibody and rear button placement makes the LG G5 nice to handle. Both handsets have their trump card to give them an edge of the competition, with the S7’s Water-resistance vs the modular design of the G5.

2. Features:

The LG certainly take the crown for innovation, thanks to the battery format. Simply press a button to slide the battery out of the bottom of the handset. This not only lets you replace the battery, but also allows you to include a new module for additional functionality, for example the LG Cam Plus (for added grip and camera controls). The LG G5 also features an innovative reversible USB Type-C connector v3.0 for fast charging and data transfer.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 relies upon its rugged persona to stand out from the crowd. (check out our blog when we see the Samsung Galaxy S7 withstand some extreme test conditions). The ability to swipe the screen to access contacts or apps is also an appealing additional feature from Samsung.

3. Camera:

Whilst Samsung have dropped the megapixel rating on the S7 down to 12 MP from 16MP of the S6, they’ve upped their game with the dual pixel sensor, offering incredible low light capabilities. The S7 offers a 95% increase in the quality of photographs taken in low light settings when compared to the S6, a welcome improvement to accompany the increased speed of the autofocus.

LG have kept their megapixels at 16MP, but add a 135 degree wide angle rear camera and additional camera modules via their ‘friends’ range.

4. Companion devices:

Anyone keeping up to date with handset releases recently couldn’t fail to notice the additional devices marketed with the mobile phones. Samsung announce the S7 duo with the Gear VR and Gear 360 camera.

LG based their entire G5 release around their additional ‘friends’ which fully takes advantage of the handset’s modular design. Read our blog showing the Friends in more detail here.

5. Battery Life:

Samsung have increased their battery life with a 3,000mAh battery on the S7 and a huge 3,600mAh offering on the S7 Edge.

The LG G5 has a slightly smaller battery at 2,800mAh. However its important to factor in the smaller screen size and the ability to swap out batteries when comparing their stamina.

The S7 promises up to 22 hours of talk time (3G) vs 20 hrs  (3g) of talk time per battery on the LG G5.

6. Screen:

Both handsets offer an always-on display, which is useful for those who hate to miss a notification. But this is where the similarities really end.  Samsung have packed some of the best Super AMOLED technology into the 5.1-inch Galaxy S7’s display and 5.5-inch curve-screened of the S7 Edge.

Whilst the LG G5’s screen is slightly smaller than their previous releases it offers a beautiful quad HD display which is IPS LCD, not AMOLED. LG have backed up their choice in IPS LCD screen by suggesting it will eliminate the chance of burn-in from the always-on display.

7. Performance:

This is where both handsets offer similar features. Both the S7 and G5 are powerhouses, using the Snapdragon 820 chipset (or the Exynos in the S7 depending on the region). They also both offer an incredible 4GB of RAM which offers power and performance.

The S7 and G5 also both run on the latest Android platform, with some additional offerings. The S7 has TouchWiz, Samsung Pay and Knox, whilst the G5 has the latest version of the LG UX 5.0.

Sim Free:

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Sim Free is available now with over £100 of freebies and the LG G5 and LG Friends are available to pre-order, with release date coming very soon.
