Google’s Next Smartphone Will Be Powered By a Custom Chip

Thursday, September 2nd, 2021

Google is joining the tech industry’s new trend of developing their own processors, alongside the ranks of tech giants Apple and Samsung. However, this chip stands out from the pack. But what makes the Google chip different?

The Need For Custom Chips

It seems like extra work to design both the software and the hardware of a new flagship smartphone. So why do the tech giants find it necessary to develop their own chips for their phones, laptops, and other gadgets.? It comes down to the fact that advancements in software development has simply outpaced advancements in commonly used hardware systems. According to Rick Osterloh, Google’s hardware chief, the company has hit the ceiling of what it can build with other companies’ chips. Osterloh continued to say that the previous hardware wasn’t capable of running sophisticated AI models. It comes down to hardware capability. If you are innovating the future of tech, you can’t play by the rules and regulations of the past.

Google’s Announcement
In the beginning of August 2021, Google announced that its next flagship phones (the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro) will be powered by a custom-built processor called Tensor. The Pixel 6 series is set to be released in the fall. The Tensor chip has taken four years to build with the best artificial intelligence and machine learning experts. Google calls the chip Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, in reference to the company’s open source machine learning platform TensorFlow. The TPUs will be application-specific chips. They are designed to be machine-learning and compatible with the AI servers that live inside giant data centers. Up until now, Pixel phones have been powered by Qualcomm processors, the most popular processor within non-Apple smartphones. This new silicon Tensor chip will have a similar architecture so customers won’t lose app compatibility.

What’s next in the future of custom hardware in the mobile industry? We’ll have to wait until the fall to see the impact of the new Tensor chip in the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro.

Squeeze the Edges:

Screen Shot 2017-11-16 at 14.15.44

Launch your Google Assistant from the locked screen as well as your home screen by simply squeezing the bottom of the device.

To customise the Active Edge features:  Settings > Apps & notifications > Default apps > Assist & voice input > Active edge

You’ll be able to adjust pressure, disable squeeze for assistant and enable/disable the ability to squeeze the phone to silence an incoming call.

Use the new search bar for apps

At the bottom of the Pixel 2′s screen, you’ll find the iconic search bar.  Whilst you can’t move or turn the bar off, but you can use it to search for apps on your device, instead of swiping up and going through the app drawer.

Configure the At a Glance widget

You’ll find this Pixel exclusive At a Glance widget at the top of your home screen. Here you’ll see weather details, upcoming calendar appointments, and more.

To customise: Long press on a blank part of the home screen > Home Settings > At a Glance.  You’ll find options for calendar events and traffic information.

Switch to Dark Mode

The hidden dark mode on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL isn’t very easy to find.

To activate, just apply a dark wallpaper with a long press on a blank part of the home screen and a tap on Wallpapers. The app drawer and quick settings pane go dark. Not everything changes though, and your notifications and Settings app stay looking the same.

Monday, October 9th, 2017

The 19th October is penned eagerly in our diary, as we await the release of the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

Promising the ‘highest quality smartphone camera experience’ for a second time, we’re interested to see just what you can expect to get from the flagship devices.

Isaac Reynolds, a product manager at Google’s Camera department published an album on Google Photos this weekend, making using of Google Photos’ “original quality” uploading. Reynolds showcased a range of photographic styles including landscapes, low-light shots, moving subjects, and the Pixel 2’s new portrait shooting mode.

The photographs demonstrate the incredible dynamic range, the vivd colour balance, the proper white balance available when using the Pixel 2′s camera. The HDR+, which uses an algorithm that allows the tiny sensor to “act like a really big one,” also influences this greater dynamic range.

Check out the full range of photographs captured by Reynolds and preorder your Google Pixel 2 today.
