Android O to be released today

We first caught a glimpse of Android O as an alpha quality developer preview earlier this year on March 21, but the wait for the official launch is nearly over.

Scheduled to coincide with the solar eclipse in the US, Android 8.0 will roll-out to compatible devices later today in an New York event at  2:40PM ET (19:40 GMT).

“Android is helping you experience this historic natural phenomenon so you can learn more about the eclipse and count down to the big day – when you’ll meet the next release of Android and all of it’s super (sweet) new powers, revealed via livestream from New York City at 2:40PM ET.” – Google

Android O

Whilst the release date is now official, we are left guessing what the ‘O’ stands for.  A post by Google to their Google + page leaked a file entitled “GoogleOreo_Teaser_0817_noDroids (1).mp4,” which suggests Oreo could be the name of the next version of Android. This information is yet to be confirmed, but reliable Tech reporter Evan Blass released what is considered a genuine press release to back up our theory:

WE are expecting to see Android O to be available on the upcoming LG Q6, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and the Google Pixel 2 devices.
