What is Dolby Atmos on Samsung Galaxy smartphones?

Thursday, December 9th, 2021

You might have seen signs advertising Dolby Atmos everywhere as it’s being marketed all over the place. You may think… what the heck is Dolby Atmos? Does it even make that much of a difference?

It does.

Dolby Atmos is an impressive new technology that brings movie theatre level surround-sound into your daily life – it gives you a better, smoother listening experience when you enjoy your music and other digital content. In fact, Dolby describes Atmos as, “the most significant development in audio since surround sound.”

Here’s where it gets a little interesting – Atmos creates 3D surround-sound, also known as spatial sound, by adding variable height for sounds. You might be wondering… what is 3D surround sound? Well, it’s similar to how sound works in real life. Sound naturally comes from all directions. Therefore, 3D surround-sound comes from above, below, and around! For instance, when a plane flies above your home, you hear that it’s above you. The same goes for when your annoying downstairs neighbour blasts music at 6AM – you can tell that the sound is coming from directly below you. Basically, Dolby Atmos recreates real life and delivers it straight through your headphones or speakers.

Atmos can be found on Samsung Galaxy S20 Series phones as well as many other newer Samsung devices. On your Samsung device, can enjoy Atmos with earphones,  bluetooth headsets, or bluetooth speakers. Furthermore, there are four different settings for Dolby Atmos on a Samsung phone: Auto, Movie, Music, and Voice. Auto adjusts to whatever you’re listening to, Movie is ideal for films, Music makes music sound richer and more balanced, and Voice helps make voices louder and clearer. There’s also an Equaliser setting where you can adjust the decibels based on the sound you’re listening to (there are Classic, Pop, Normal Jazz, Rock, and Custom settings). Atmos on the Samsung Galaxy even has a setting for gaming (“Dolby atmos for gaming” setting) that provides you with the best audio experience when you play games on your Samsung Galaxy phone. It creates all sorts of audio magic by mixing your audio in real time, based on your Atmos settings.

What will you listen to with Dolby Atmos?

Experience Dolby Atmos.

With the prominence of remote work in our lives, people have been rediscovering ways to improve their home offices. From DIY design upgrades to new tech, there are many ways you could make working from home more productive. Are you feeling like your home office isn’t meeting the demands of your job? Take the logistical stress out of your day and consider if buying a new tablet if the right choice for your needs.

Tablet Talk

You’ve probably heard all about the big tablet boom. From media portrayal to high end brand releases, tablets are all the rage these days. The majority of the big telecommunications brands have their own version of a tablet, the most well-known of which are Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Tablets are easier to use than a smartphone because of the bigger screen making it easier to view websites and watch videos. Similar to a smartphone, tablets have a large app market and thousands of app options for users. Tablets are in high demand because they are lightweight and easily portable while holding similar capabilities as a laptop, while being more affordable.  This broadens the world of what a tablet can do from streaming to art design, making the tablet a great asset to your home office. However, there are some reasons a tablet may not be for you. If you need access to an HDMI port or USB ports to connect to a projector, non-wireless printer, or hard drive, then a computer may be better suited for you. With that being said, a tablet can be a great addition to households who already have computers but would like a more transportable option for their remote work or school.

How to Take a Picture of the Moon with a Smartphone

Thursday, September 23rd, 2021

iPhone 12 Pro

If you’ve ever tried to take a picture of the night sky with your smartphone, it’s pretty clear that the moon never looks as good in photos as it doesn’t in person. However with the increase of innovation in the tech industry, handset cameras are becoming more high quality. This means you don’t need to break the bank to get a high definition photograph. Whether you are on a romantic night out or hanging with friends at a beach bonfire, here are some tips to help you improve your photography and best capture your memories.

Night Sky Photography Tips:

  1. Clean your lens. Thumbprints can obstruct a good image so give your lens a wipe with a lint-free cloth before heading out.
  2. Steady your hand or use a tripod to ensure a clear image.
  3. Plan your timing. The moon is most visible as it is rising so try your luck at the beginning of the night.
  4. Pinch and zoom to frame and then make sure your flash is off.
  5. Want even more control over your quality? Download a specialized camera app. This will allow you to manually adjust things like ISO and shutter speed.
  6. Check if your phone has advanced photography features. Some handsets have a Night Mode in their camera settings that elevate camera performance.

The company announced the new flagship smartphone, alongside the new iPad and Apple Watch. Missed the lived stream? Our team at Unlocked Mobiles have captured the top product announcements and release dates so you don’t have to. Here are the 2021 Apple Launch highlights:

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini

As expected, Apple announced its new iPhone 13 series. The iPhone 12 comes in several fresh colours with a brighter, better display. The new iPhones also introduce Apple’s A15 Bionic chip for improved performance and longer battery life. How does the iPhone 13 compare to the iPhone 12? They look pretty similar in terms of design and display. This biggest difference being the larger battery in the iPhone 13, which lasts up to an hour and a half longer than the iPhone 12. Pre-orders for the iPhone 13 lineup begin September 17th.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max introduced brighter (28% brighter than the iPhone 12 Pro). The handset is also more durable thanks to a new ceramic shield durability to prevent cracked screens. Apple is adding massive storage capabilities to the iPhone 13 Pro, with a new 1 terabyte option. Focused on getting the perfect picture?Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro has a 77mm telephoto lens to do 3x macro shots.

The New iPad and iPad Mini
Apple showcased the new iPad and iPad Mini models. The 10.2-inch iPad received an upgrade to the A13 Bionic processor, 1st Gen Apple Pencil support, and fastly improved 12MP cameras on the front and the back. Meanwhile, the new iPad Mini introduces a bigger screen and four colours. It has USB Type-C (not lightning,) 2nd Gen Apple Pencil support, 5G, TouchID, and improved 12MP cameras on both the front and the back.

The Apple Watch Series 7
The Watch Series 7 won’t ship until later this fall but you can pre-order it now. It has 33% more charging capabilities with slimmer bezels, measuring just 1.7mm, and a larger screen. It is 20% bigger and 40% thinner than the Series 6. You can choose from the 41mm and 45mm sizes.

iOS 15
Perhaps one of the biggest innovations was the release of iOS 15. Apple announced iOS 15 will become available on September 20. It will come with a privacy dashboard that will help you manage the permissions you’ve granted on your iPhone, including a new email feature, which will prevent marketers from being able to record your IP address and other data each time you open an email. This is a big win in the war for internet user privacy. Excited about the new Apple buzz? Stay tuned with Unlocked Mobiles for exclusive deals on Apple products.

Wireless has slowly been taking over the telecommunications industry in the last decade. With the popularity of 5G and long range WiFi, it seems that wireless is a permanent fixture in our industry. It can be hard to keep up with the constant innovation. Here’s our take on what wireless technology is currently at the frontlines of the movement.

Wireless Technology Trends

Wi-Fi is at the center of the wireless movement, as the primary high-performance networking technology for homes and offices. However, recently WiFi has begun to be used in new roles such as radar systems and authentication systems. This advancement is mirrored in the innovation of cellar systems such as 5G, as a cost-effective for high-speed data networking in large sites, such as ports, airports and factories. In the auto industry, we are beginning to see V2X Wireless components that include self-driving cars, wireless phone systems in vehicles, and navigation support. Other forms of popular wireless technologies include:
1. Long-Range Wireless Power
2. Low-Power Wide-Area (LPWA) Networks 3. Wireless Sensing
4. Enhanced Wireless Location Tracking
5. Millimeter Wave Wireless
6. Backscatter Networking
7. Software-Defined Radio (SDR)

Google’s Next Smartphone Will Be Powered By a Custom Chip

Thursday, September 2nd, 2021

1586825992970

Google is joining the tech industry’s new trend of developing their own processors, alongside the ranks of tech giants Apple and Samsung. However, this chip stands out from the pack. But what makes the Google chip different?

The Need For Custom Chips

It seems like extra work to design both the software and the hardware of a new flagship smartphone. So why do the tech giants find it necessary to develop their own chips for their phones, laptops, and other gadgets.? It comes down to the fact that advancements in software development has simply outpaced advancements in commonly used hardware systems. According to Rick Osterloh, Google’s hardware chief, the company has hit the ceiling of what it can build with other companies’ chips. Osterloh continued to say that the previous hardware wasn’t capable of running sophisticated AI models. It comes down to hardware capability. If you are innovating the future of tech, you can’t play by the rules and regulations of the past.

Google’s Announcement
In the beginning of August 2021, Google announced that its next flagship phones (the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro) will be powered by a custom-built processor called Tensor. The Pixel 6 series is set to be released in the fall. The Tensor chip has taken four years to build with the best artificial intelligence and machine learning experts. Google calls the chip Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, in reference to the company’s open source machine learning platform TensorFlow. The TPUs will be application-specific chips. They are designed to be machine-learning and compatible with the AI servers that live inside giant data centers. Up until now, Pixel phones have been powered by Qualcomm processors, the most popular processor within non-Apple smartphones. This new silicon Tensor chip will have a similar architecture so customers won’t lose app compatibility.

What’s next in the future of custom hardware in the mobile industry? We’ll have to wait until the fall to see the impact of the new Tensor chip in the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Galaxy Fold: What should you buy?

Thursday, July 29th, 2021

fhWfuAhhoJNN7BnP3qDMsT

The Samsung Galaxy Fold series is one of the most innovative recent developments in the mobile industry. It features a book-style design with a vertical fold, revolutionizing our conceptions of modern smartphones. If you’re looking to upgrade to a foldable smartphone, you’re probably looking at the recent Samsung products. Now the real question is, how do you decide between the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Galaxy Fold? And is there actually a difference? Here’s a clear and easy breakdown to help you decide what phone is the best for you.

Price

Money makes the world go around. Getting a new Samsung Galaxy Fold is an investment so let’s break down what you’ll pay for each phone. The Samsung Galaxy Fold starts at £1,800. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 was released in 2020 at £1,999 but it can be picked up right here on Unlocked Mobiles for £1,124. That saves you over £800! Best bang for your buck? Buying on Unlocked Mobiles saves you money on both phones and offers Sim Freedom to maximize your savings!

Design
Both the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 feature a book-style design with a vertical fold. The Galaxy Fold measures at 160.9 x 62.8 x 17.1mm when folded and 160.9 x 117.9 x 7.6mm when unfolded. There’s a triple camera on the rear and a dual camera on the front. The frame is made from stainless steel and the device comes in two colour options of Space Silver and Cosmos Black. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes in two colours: Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black. There are also four hinge customisation options: Metallic Silver, Metallic Red, Metallic Blue, Metallic Gold. The Z Fold 2 is slimmer but wider than the Fold, measuring at 159.2 x 68 x 16.8mm folded and 159.2 x 128.2 x 6.9mm unfolded. The hinge has also been redesigned, allowing for opening at different angles. In a stylistic touch, the gap between the hinge and display has been reduced. The Z Fold 2 has the same rear camera display, however a punch hole camera has been added on the front, right side of the internal display. Our Vote? Both feature advanced camera systems and sleek designs. The Galaxy Fold is perfect for those who want a smaller display and more traditional colours. It comes down to personal colour and design preference.

Display
The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a 7.3-inch display when unfolded and a 4.6-inch external display when folded. The display is AMOLED with a resolution of 2152 x 1536 that delivers a pixel density of 362ppi. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded and a 6.2-inch screen when folded. It offers an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate and has a resolution of 2208 x 1768 pixels, delivering a pixel density of 372ppi.
Can you see the light? For a bigger and brighter display, I recommend the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Summary
So there you have it! There’s no wrong choice. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Fold are both sleek, high-speed devices that excel industry-wide in display quality, performance and photography. If you want my two cents, I’d go with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 for the best design, display quality, and most powerful camera system. You can pick up both phones on Unlocked Mobiles now for unbelievable savings!

Sustainability in the Olympics

Tuesday, July 27th, 2021

0- olymp gt

After a year long delay, the Summer Olympics are here! This year the games are held in Tokyo and several surrounding cities in Japan, including Fukushima and Yokohama. The Summer Olympics officially began July 23 with the opening ceremony and end August 8 with the closing ceremony. The Olympics typically draw together more than 11,000 athletes and 25,000 journalists from more than 200 countries. This year, the Summer Games are rumored to be unlike ever before. Tokyo has put an emphasis on sustainability, turning an eye to the telecommunications and electronics industries.

The Unique Medal Design of the Olympics

But what does the telecommunications industry have to do with the Olympics? This year, the medals in Tokyo are made from recycled cellphones and other electronics, helping to combat e-waste pollution and global warming. Recycling has been a key part of the sustainability efforts of the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, with both the medals and podium being made from used materials.

The Rise of E-Waste Pollution

This public display of sustainability is incredibly important because it brings the e-waste epidemic to the public eye. The volume of e-waste has been rising significantly over the past ten years. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it is estimated that between 20 and 50 million tons of e-waste gets generated worldwide annually. In that, there are roughly 416,000 cellphones disposed of each day. This not only pollutes the earth but also pollutes the surrounding air and water with toxicity. The biggest thing we can do to limit e-waste is to properly recycle or refurnish or technology.

Recycle with Unlocked Mobiles

Our team at Unlocked Mobiles offers a Recycle Your Phone feature, where you trade in your used phones in an eco-friendly way and make a profit while doing so! We are committed to refurbishing used phones to create a more sustainable future for the quickly-changing tech industry. As a company, we are working towards a better future for our planet by striving to limit e-waste and advocating for environmental preservation. Have a phone you’d like to recycle? Visit our Recycle Your Phone page and join the e- waste prevention movement!
