India could soon host its first Mobile Congress this year, says Cellular Operators Association of India, with the first Indian edition of Mobile World Congress assisting manufacturers to reach out to the South East Asian markets.

“There is Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and an edition in Shanghai. There is nothing in between for South East Asia. India is emerging as one of the global leaders in telecom which we will also showcase in the Indian Mobile Congress,” COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews states.

Indian Mobile World Congress is proposed by both Department of Telecom and Ministry of Electronics and IT, to be materialized by COAl. The event is believed to kick off in late September 2017, at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Participants are believed to include Facebook, Huawei, Ericsson and Cisco. Rumours are also circulating that operators Airtel and BSNL have collaborated with Nokia to soon launch 5G services in India.

Whilst COAI were hoping for collaboration with GSMA in launching this event, GSMA have reportedly declined participation in a press release this week:

Contrary to media reports, the GSMA is not collaborating with COAI in the development of the India Mobile Congress scheduled to take place in September.

The GSMA produces industry-leading events such as Mobile World Congress, Mobile World Congress Shanghai, Mobile World Congress Americas and the Mobile 360 Series of conferences, including Mobile 360 – India, which will be held in New Delhi, 14-15 November, 2017.
