Apple file Patent for Samsung Galaxy Edge style Curved screen

Wednesday, August 17th, 2016

Apple filed a patent (Patent US009411451) on April of last year for electronic devices with sidewall displays and ‘bent flexible displays may be bent to form front side displays and edge displays’.

The patent describes ”Edge displays may alternatively function as virtual buttons, virtual switches or information displays that are supplemental to front side displays… Edge shows might alternatively perform as digital buttons, digital switches or info shows which might be supplemental to entrance aspect shows.”

This makes us think that Apple are putting together future iPhones (the iPhone 8 maybe) that will offer a curved screen similar to those seen in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Note 7.

iOS10 Beta Tried and Tested: Top 5 Improvements

Monday, July 11th, 2016

Apples iOS 10 public beta is now live, with interesting new updates and features.

Before you do download it, remember it is just a beta so some of your favourite apps may be buggy. So if you’re not quite ready to test out the new OS, check out our review of the top 5 updates below:

iOS 10
1. Apple Music:
In Apple’s iOS 10 beta, the redesigned Apple Music app shines.  Menus are cleaner, so it’s easier to search for songs or artists. the old cluttered interface has been streamlined, with a default view of your library of music.
2. Photos and Memories album:

The addition of face recognition, on your iOS device prompts you to name the faces that it’s recognised, creating dynamic libraries for each person. The new Memories album also sorts your photos based on date and location making the new OS a more organised way to store and enjoy your photos and Videos.

3. Raise to Wake:
A feature that we’ve seen on Android for a while, Raise to wake has finally arrived on iOS.
Simply pick up your handset and access your messages without pressing a button.

4. Delete Apple’s core app:
Apple didn’t mention this in the keynote speech, but they are finally allowing users to remove most of Apple’s core once nonremovable apps from their handsets. Technically only the user data is deleted, while the app remains hidden on your device, so if you find that a day comes when you finally need to check stocks, or locate north on your compass, you can simply restore the apps via the App Store just like you would a regular app.
5. Improved 3D Touch:
Users of the iPhone 6S will be familiar with 3D Touch, but with iOS 10 you’ll be able to do more with it. Your Apps now have little widgets with extra info, and the control panel has new settings for things like flashlight or the camera.
Other improvements include a redesigned maps, responsive predictive texts, a Home app to control all of your HomeKit-compatible smart-home appliance.

The iPhone SE VS the iPhone 5s

iPhone se vs iPhone 5s

The arrival of Apple’s latest iPhone, the iPhone SE has been to mixed reviews this week, with some claiming it is the ‘the most powerful 4‑inch phone ever’ and others suggesting that Apple are rehashing old ideas. However, as with any new release from Apple it can’t be ignored and will undoubtably take the market by storm.

We take a look at the new handset and pit it against its most fair competitor, the iPhone 5s.

Size:

The new iPhone is almost identical in size to the iPhone 5S

Here’s how they measure up:

  • iPhone SE = 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm (4.87 x 2.31 x 0.30 in), 113g (3.99 oz)
  • iPhone 5s =  123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm (4.87 x 2.31 x 0.30 in), 112g (3.95 oz)

Display:

There aren’t any obvious differences between the iPhone SE and 5S when it comes to screen size and display quality. Both offer a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD, 640 x 1136 pixels (326 ppi pixel density), with 60.8% screen-to-body ratio. The lack of 3D touch (seen in the 6s) is important to note, but we feel this is fair when reflecting on the lower price bracket of the recent release.

Camera:

The iPhone SE offers on the rear capabilities as the iPhone 6S/iPhone 6S Plus, so a significant upgrade from the 5s. However, the front facing camera has not matched this upgrade and provides the same 1.2 megapixel offerings as the 5S.

Here’s how the photographic offerings compare:

  • iPhone SE – Rear: 12 megapixel sensor, f2.0 aperture, Focus Pixels, dual-LED flash, 4K video recording. Front: 1.2MP Front Camera, f2.4 aperture, 720p video recording
  • iPhone 5S – Rear: 8MP sensor, f2.2 aperture, 1080p video recording; 1.2MP Front Camera, f2.4 aperture, 720p video recording

Performance and Connectivity

This is where the iPhone SE outshines it’s older brother, thanks to its improved performance:

  • iPhone SE = Apple A9, CPU: Dual-core 1.84 GHz Twister, GPU: PowerVR GT7600 (six-core graphics), 2GB RAM
  • iPhone 5S = Apple A7, CU Dual-core 1.3 GHz Cyclone (ARM v8-based), GPU: PowerVR G6430 (quad-core graphics), 1GB RAM

iphone se performance vs 5s

The iPhone SE basically offers the same internal performance as the iPhone 6S, with the same speaker and Touch ID fingerprint sensor as the iPhone 5s.

Battery Life:

The lower resolution isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it does contribute to the SE being the fastest iPhone with the longest lasting battery on the market.

Despite a small upgrade in battery capacity, the SE does offer a significant improvement in both talk time, with an extra 4 hours of use:

  • iPhone SE – 1642 mAh, Talk time: Up to 14 hours on 3G, Internet use: Up to 12 hours on 3G /up to 13 hours on 4G LTE &WiFI ,
  • iPhone 5S – 1560 mAh, Talk time: Up to 10 h on 3G,

Overall, the iPhone SE is a good option for those looking for a small, but perfectly formed iPhone, that can operate in a similar way tot eh more expensive 6S/6S Plus without the price tag.
