iOS 12: What you need to know.

Wednesday, May 30th, 2018

Apple are announcing the new iOS 12 on Monday, June 4 at 10am PT at Apple’s WWDC 2018 keynote, giving developers and early beta testers a preview at the next big update.

The update is said to focuse on reliability, rather than updating front facing specs. We’re hearing that the big message from Apple for their new OS is that “iOS 12 just works.”

But what does it offer in terms interface changes and new features? We take a look:

Animojis for the iPad:

Apple are looking to introduce new Animoji characters and a more user friendly interface that’s easier to navigate.

With the iPad Pro rumoured to house a TrueDepth camera, we’re also expecting to see Animoji on these next generation iPads.

Animoji FaceTime:

Now you’ll be able to chat to your friends in virtual fancy dress, thanks to the likely addition of Animojis to FaceTime.

Cross Platform apps:

One of the biggest and most exciting change coming with iOS 12 may be cross-platform apps. The update will allow developers to design a single app that will work across al iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

A Personalised response from Siri: A recent patent application filed by Apple details an “Intelligent Digital Assistant for Declining an Incoming Call”.

Currently if the phone rings you can choose to answer or reject it, but in the future Siri will use its intelligence to send an automatic text to the caller, explaining why you can’t take the call (e.g I’m driving or I’m working out).

Horizontal Face ID:

Many are predicting that iOS 12 will see Horizontal Face ID support, allowing Face ID to work when your device is in landscape mode.

Improved Parental Control:

iOS 12 could see per-app passcode or Touch ID lock added to Parental Control. Current parental controls allow users to lock the entire phone, but updates may allow users to lock individual apps, a great improvement from both a data protection and parental control point of view.

iPhone 8 face recognition system to work in ‘millionths of a second’

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017

Most reports are pointing to Apple abandoning TouchID in the upcoming iPhone 8 devices. The forward thinking tech firm are said to be replacing fingerprint sensors with face recognition that will secure your unlock screen and Apple Pay authorisation.

Samsung are said to be making the OLED displays for the iPhone 8 devices, and claims are circulating that the speed of the facial-recognition system used in the device will be measured in ‘millionths of a second.’

Also, 3-D sensors are said to be adopted for the front and rear of the device to realize AR applications, which integrate 3-D virtual images with user’s environment in real time. - Shin Ji-hye, Korea Herald
