Google Pixel 2 Review at a Glance

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018

Offering stunning photographic opportunities and high end Android OS, the Google Pixel 2 is taking the popularity lead during the start of 2018.

Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvatages of the Google Pixel 2 over the other market leaders:

Pros:

  • The main selling point for any Pixel devices have been the camera specifications. With market leading photographic tech, Google’s devices have been top of the leaderboard and low level image capture is especially impressive.
  • Like the Google Pixel 2 XL, the Pixel 2 offers two memory versions, with 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, making it a perfect fit for most budgets.
  • Fast Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4GB of RAM makes the user experience fast and smooth.
  • The distinct lack of an overlay and no third-party apps also results in plenty of free storage.
  • With the Pixel’s clean Android interface you’ll enjoy pure unadulterated Android 8.
  • Image quality is clear and sharp on the 5 inch AMOLED display (with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 441 ppi)
  • Google Lens, comes in handy to analyse photos and extract useful information like contact details, websites, subject, locations on the go.
  • Dual front-facing speakers offer an incredible audio experience.
  • The Premium water resistant body allows you to use the device in pretty much any situation.
  • Google Assistant: simply squeeze the phone’s sides to launch your new AI buddy.
  • Whilst the battery of the Pixel 2 has reduced slightly since the original Google Pixel, with an offering of 2,700mAh battery, you’ll still enjoy all-day battery life.

Cons:

  • The bezel of the Google Pixel 2 is larger than the likes of Samsung Galaxy S8 that manages to pack in a large infinity display without the added bulk.
  • No headphone jack. Whilst only a handful of new releases omit the headphone jack, we can see it becoming a huge trend for 2018, so it’s the time to switch to wireless headphones is now.

Launch your Google Assistant from the locked screen as well as your home screen by simply squeezing the bottom of the device.

To customise the Active Edge features:  Settings > Apps & notifications > Default apps > Assist & voice input > Active edge

You’ll be able to adjust pressure, disable squeeze for assistant and enable/disable the ability to squeeze the phone to silence an incoming call.

Use the new search bar for apps

At the bottom of the Pixel 2′s screen, you’ll find the iconic search bar.  Whilst you can’t move or turn the bar off, but you can use it to search for apps on your device, instead of swiping up and going through the app drawer.

Configure the At a Glance widget

You’ll find this Pixel exclusive At a Glance widget at the top of your home screen. Here you’ll see weather details, upcoming calendar appointments, and more.

To customise: Long press on a blank part of the home screen > Home Settings > At a Glance.  You’ll find options for calendar events and traffic information.

Switch to Dark Mode

The hidden dark mode on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL isn’t very easy to find.

To activate, just apply a dark wallpaper with a long press on a blank part of the home screen and a tap on Wallpapers. The app drawer and quick settings pane go dark. Not everything changes though, and your notifications and Settings app stay looking the same.
