Blur the background with Huawei’s Wide Aperture Mode on the Huawei P9

Monday, September 19th, 2016

Just one click into Instagram and you’ll be faced with beautifully shot images taking advantage of depth of field to focus the eye on what’s important. You may be forgiven for thinking you need to fork out for the best DSLR Camera to achieve this effect, but this isn’t the case.

Take the Huawei P9 device, with Huawei’s Wide Aperture Mode and you’ll be instagramming like a pro.

What is Wide Aperture mode and why should I use it?

Wide aperture mode lets you take photographs with a shallow depth of field as well as adjust the focal point of a captured photo to blur the background and make your subject more prominent.

Android Marshmallow: Now on Tap

Tuesday, July 12th, 2016

The future of Google searching is here in the form of Now on Tap.

The main idea of Google’s Now on Tap is to extend the reach of Google across your mobile, making it easier and faster to find the information you need.

Android now on tap

Now on Tap is integrated into Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and can be used by holding down the home button. Once activated, Google performs a search and scan of the current screen, providing relevant information than may be of use such as web links, directions etc.

How to use Now on Tap on your Android handset:

  1. On any screen, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Google uses what’s on your screen to show you related info, apps, and actions

Now on tap

So, how would you use Now on Tap during everyday life?

Google gives the following examples:

  • Restaurants: Find restaurants and other points of interest mentioned on screen.
  • Movies: See reviews and info about a cast using the film name.
  • Music: Get details about a song or artist from within your app.
  • People: Learn about famous people and celebrities in the news.
  • Images: Get info about artwork, product logos, landmarks, and more.

Searching images on Google isn’t exactly a new thing, but with Now on Tap you literally replace search terms with an image. For example, if you can take a photograph of Big Ben, hold the home button to activate Now on Tap and the handset will analyse the image contents to provide you more information on this tourist attraction.  It can even work and analyse photos direct from your camera app.

Huawei’s P9 Lite: the Lightweight champion against the Huawei P9

Monday, July 4th, 2016

The Huawei P9 Lite is being marketed as a scaled down (in features not size) model of the original P9 by Huawei, nevertheless this budget friendly handset is still perfectly formed.

With a 5.2 inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the Full HD display of the P9 lite is identical to the Huawei P9. The only difference is the glass choice, with Huawei replacing the Gorilla Glass 4 of the P9, with the simple glass cover on the lite version. Nevertheless, colour representation and brightness are one of the main criteria for judging a good smartphone display and Huawei have boosted these areas with the P9 lite, allowing it to achieve a credible 450 candelas.

Running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Huawei have also managed to create some additional Android options that wouldn’t necessary come as default. The fingerprint scanner on the rear of the handset not only unlocks your phone but can also be use for other actions, such as accepting calls, taking selfies or swiping through images.

The Huawei P9 Lite also offers NFC and LTE connectivity and is powered by a 1.8GHz/2.5GHz octa-core Kirin 955 Processor and 3GB Ram, which makes the handset a speedy choice.

Camera choices for both handsets differ slightly,  with a more conventional choice for the more budget friendly P9 Lite. Whereas the flagship P9 original offers Leica’s dual camera setup, the P9 Lite is more similar to last year’s Huawei P8, with a single camera set up.

Here’s a low down on how both handsets compare:

Unboxing of the Huawei P9: Leica dual camera

Monday, May 23rd, 2016

If you’ve been following our Instagram or Google Plus accounts you’ll have seen this little beauty land on our desks:

huawei p9

When we first looked at the Huawei P9 we couldn’t escape the design similarities to the previous P8. The metal body’s chamfered edges give a real premium look, and at 6.98mm thick the handset offers a slimline feel in the hand or pocket. The 5.2 inch screen is surrounded by an extremely tiny edge bezel, while a SIM and microSD tray means potential to expand upon internal storage if you want.

huawei p9 dual camera leica

Huawei partnered with the century-old German optics and camera manufacturer Leica (the first collaboration for the camera company) to grace the handset with its rear dual camera. Leica and Huawei have managed to make the back of the camera sit flush with the rest of the phone with one 12-megapixel full-colour sensor with 27mm f/2.2 lens and one monochrome sensor with the same lens.  The addition of a dedicated monochrome sensor reduces image noise as there is no colour filter array chopping up the pixel size on the sensor. This results in a much better quality and gradation to the image.

The box of the P9 adds to the premium quality feel to the handset.

Here’s what you get inside:
