Microsoft has announced the new Lumia 535, the first Lumia device without the Nokia branding. The device supports a quad-core 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor and runs the latest Windows Phone 8.1. It has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable internal memory and a 1905mAh battery.

The Lumia 535 has a 5 inch IPS display with a resolution of 540 x 960 and is aimed at the lower end of the market. The 535 is the sequel to the Lumia 530, though bigger and slimmer it has the same plastic back and rounded corners with the same variety of available colours.

Cortana is a new smartphone PA powered by Bing and it certainly impresses us. Inspired by real life personal assistants Cortana intelligently learns your likes, routines and preferences to gain enough knowledge to anticipate your needs. Asking questions to ensure she knows what matters to you, Cortana also promises to gain enough intelligence to schedule you reminders and all your important details to ensure your life runs smoothly.

Whilst many are quick to label Cortana as the Window’s Siri, Nokia and Microsoft are very keen to outline some of the ways Cortana surpasses Apple’s offerings. By answering some questions on start up and allowing access to all your personal details, emails, GPS, tweets, messages etc (which does raise some privacy issues) Cortana will figure out where you live and work, pop reminders on screen when someone calls you (eg say happy anniversary to your wife when she calls) and warn you of traffic backups before you even  start the journey.

A neat trick we liked was the ability to schedule ‘Quiet Hours’ when she’ll intercept calls from everyone apart from those in your ‘Inner Circle of Friends’, allowing you to field calls seamlessly.

The low cost Nokia 208 has a 2.4 inch QVGA display with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels giving a pixel density of 167ppi. It also has a microSD card slot and Bluetooth 3.0 with Nokia’s Slam sharing technology which allows you to share images and videos with friends with no pairing necessary.

This device is very similar to the Nokia 207, except that the 208 has a 1.3 megapixel rear facing camera which has a self guided portrait mode and panorama feature. It has manual settings for white balance, landscape and a self timer.
