Update for Android and iOS users of BBM for consumers

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

June 2016 saw a collaboration between BlackBerry and their trusted partner Emtek Group, working together to improve the BBM Consumer platform.

Emtek is a leading digital media content company with an impressive portfolio of television, web, and content production assets; CMW is Emtek’s subsidiary.

Emtek and blackberry

Offering a compelling ecosystem, investments, and technology resources to take BBM to the next level, BlackBerry licensed Emtek’s subsidiary Creative Media Works Pte Ltd (Co. Reg. No. 201609444E) the rights to develop and offer cross-platform BBM.

Since their partnership, BlackBerry has been gradually transferring certain aspects of the platform to CMW, such as development of the BBM application itself. To make this a seamless transition, BlackBerry will transfer your BBM Consumer data to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform.

Here’s some additional information from BlackBerry regarding the shift:

What is BlackBerry’s ongoing involvement in BBM Consumer?

BlackBerry owns 100% of BBM and has licensed the rights to BBM Consumer (i.e., the Android, iOS and Windows Phone versions of BBM) to CMW. BlackBerry continues to operate the BBOS and BlackBerry 10 versions of BBM, as well as BBM Enterprise (formerly BBM Protected). If you use these other versions of BBM, keep in mind that they are distinct from BBM Consumer and not affected.

What will CMW be doing?

As CMW takes over BBM Consumer operations, you can expect additional new BBM content and services, and continued improvement in your access to content and features to continually improve. CMW is committed to securing your information as set forth in these updated BBM Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. CMW has already included new security features such as Second Factor Authentication (2FA) for registration via e-mail or phone number.

What should I do if I prefer not to have my data transferred to CMW’s BBM platform?

If you prefer not to have your data transferred to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform, you may discontinue using BBM Consumer and close your account before February 26, 2018.

Could the Samsung Galaxy S9 be the first handset to repel water?

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

We’ve all been there, using our handsets in the rain and the ater droplets interfer with the touchscreen capabilities. Whilst there have been many advancements with water resistance to ensure these drops of water do not harm the tech inside your device, we’ve seen little protection for the usability of the displays in wet condtions.

This is where the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus devices could step in, using a water repelling technology that was first licensed by the tech giants late 2016.

The license covers a superhydrophobic glass coating, which forces water to literally bounce off the glass due to a water droplet contact angle of between 155 and 165 degrees.

“The thin nanostructured layer of porous glass film enables these combined properties, making it suitable for commercial applications,” said ORNL’s Tolga Aytug, co-inventor of the technology.

Developed by the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the superhydrophobic coating will also reduce light reflection and resist fingerprints and smudges, ensuring the device will have the smoothest physical usability experience we’ve seen yet.

Wednesday, August 30th, 2017

Apple announced the ARKit at its annual developers conference earlier this summer, allowing app developers to draw on detailed camera and sensor data to map digital objects into 3D space. Whilst Apple are up against tough competition including Google’s ARCore, its vast customer base will almost guarantee Apple’s success in the Augmented Reality World.

We were given insight into what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming AR apps testers, as AR app developers gathered on Apple’s campus in Cupertino, Calif. yesterday to demo their work. Big brand including Giphy, Ikea, The Food Network, The Walking Dead and The Hungry Caterpillar were all in on the action.

So what can we expect from these Apps?

1. Ikea:

Allowing you to place up to 2,000 items from its current catalogue into your spaces before purchase.

2. The Walking Dead: Our World

A blood thirsty Pokemon for grownups, The Walking Dead: Our World will let you team up with members of the Walking Dead gang to take down the Walkers in your natural habitat.

3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Based on the children’s classic tale, The Very Hungry Caterpillar AR allows children to look after their own hungry caterpillar, interacting with the little guy by feeding, playing and keeping him safe until the transformation to butterfly happens. Cuteness overload.

4. Giphy World:

Allows you to place gifs in 3D space, share videos of them or even share the whole 3D scene in AR with friends who have the app
