What is Dolby Atmos on Samsung Galaxy smartphones?

Thursday, December 9th, 2021

You might have seen signs advertising Dolby Atmos everywhere as it’s being marketed all over the place. You may think… what the heck is Dolby Atmos? Does it even make that much of a difference?

It does.

Dolby Atmos is an impressive new technology that brings movie theatre level surround-sound into your daily life – it gives you a better, smoother listening experience when you enjoy your music and other digital content. In fact, Dolby describes Atmos as, “the most significant development in audio since surround sound.”

Here’s where it gets a little interesting – Atmos creates 3D surround-sound, also known as spatial sound, by adding variable height for sounds. You might be wondering… what is 3D surround sound? Well, it’s similar to how sound works in real life. Sound naturally comes from all directions. Therefore, 3D surround-sound comes from above, below, and around! For instance, when a plane flies above your home, you hear that it’s above you. The same goes for when your annoying downstairs neighbour blasts music at 6AM – you can tell that the sound is coming from directly below you. Basically, Dolby Atmos recreates real life and delivers it straight through your headphones or speakers.

Atmos can be found on Samsung Galaxy S20 Series phones as well as many other newer Samsung devices. On your Samsung device, can enjoy Atmos with earphones,  bluetooth headsets, or bluetooth speakers. Furthermore, there are four different settings for Dolby Atmos on a Samsung phone: Auto, Movie, Music, and Voice. Auto adjusts to whatever you’re listening to, Movie is ideal for films, Music makes music sound richer and more balanced, and Voice helps make voices louder and clearer. There’s also an Equaliser setting where you can adjust the decibels based on the sound you’re listening to (there are Classic, Pop, Normal Jazz, Rock, and Custom settings). Atmos on the Samsung Galaxy even has a setting for gaming (“Dolby atmos for gaming” setting) that provides you with the best audio experience when you play games on your Samsung Galaxy phone. It creates all sorts of audio magic by mixing your audio in real time, based on your Atmos settings.

What will you listen to with Dolby Atmos?

Will we ever see the Samsung Galaxy Fold? We hope so.

Monday, May 13th, 2019

A little under three months ago a few members of the Unlocked Mobiles team were in attendance at the Samsung event in San Francisco, where Samsung unveiled the future in smartphones, well at least we thought so, with the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The hall was filled with excitement, everyone thought that this was an industry changer and we were expecting a new evolution in handheld devices.

After the announcements, we all made our way through the exhibition area to the sample rooms on either side of the venue, we were all excited to see the amazing new device. However, there was one strange question by everyone at this event when we got to the display stands – just why is the Galaxy Fold not on display? Why would there be an announcement for a product and then not have it to show the people who were invited. If there was an indication that Samsung were not ready to showcase this device then this was it. A week later at MWC in Barcelona, we were greeted with exactly the same situation. However, we had faith in Samsung, even after the Note issues in the past, surely they would not make a similar mistake? Well, it appears to have happened again. The lucky people (press and influences that haven’t paid and would have to return the initial samples) who got to use the device before general sale started to receive their sample units and gradually the devices became unusable and failed.

As of writing this post, we are still unsure at to whether the Fold will be released. We hope it does. We hope it will work and we hope it will make way for a new array of amazing devices from Samsung and other OEM manufacturers. Be confident that if it is released, Unlocked Mobiles will stock the Samsung Galaxy Fold Sim Free, so register your interest on our product page – you never know – it may be the best phone ever released after all!

Samsung Unpacked: The Samsung Galaxy X

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

Samsung is bucking the trend, announcing their new devices at the dedicated Samsung Unpacked event this coming Wednesday in San Fransisco rather than at the traditional announcement venue, MWC, Barcelona.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked
Stakes are high for the Tech Giant as the mobile industry awaits confirmation of their industry changing foldable handset, rumoured to be called the Samsung Galaxy X.

We’ve been hearing tales of folding displays for years, and we’ve finally seen these dreams come to fruition with secretive snapshots of the long rumoured Galaxy X at Samsung’s annual developer conference back in November and as a teaser in their latest marketing video.

The flagship phone, groundbreaking the Galaxy Fold or Galaxy F) is said to offer an incredible 7.3-inch flexible OLED that folds in half. We are also expecting to see a secondary, smaller 4.6 inch OLED “cover display” that lets you continue using the device when the larger display is folded shut.

Other rumoured ground breaking specs include a battery capacity of 6,200 mAh in the form of not one, but two 3,100 mAh batteries.

Like the Galaxy S10, the foldable Galaxy X will be powered by the top-of-the-line Qualcomm SnapDragon 855 chipset, coupled with 6GB of RAM and a minimum of 128GB of in-built storage.

Unlocked Mobiles will be reporting live from the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, so stay tuned for up to date reports as they happen.

8 Rumours surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S8

Monday, January 23rd, 2017

It has been all but confirmed that Samsung are likely to announce the successor to the incredibly popular Samsung Galaxy S7, the Samsung Galaxy S8, at Mobile World Congress 2017.

Alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge, Samsung’s latest flagship is likely to make up for the disaster of “explosion gate” thanks to some impressive features and specifications.

We’ve collected 8 of the best rumours:

1. Goodbye Headphone Jack

Samsung galaxy s8 headphone jack

Taking their lead from Apple, it is rumoured that Samsung are to do away with the headphone jacks in their latest handsets. Backed up by claims from SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant are also planning to launch a new pair of wireless earbuds to accompany the Galaxy S8 later this year.

2. Edge to Edge Display

There are many ‘leaked images’, rendors and concept images based on information from reliable sources suggesting the Galaxy S8 could a bezel-less device. Unlike the Galaxy S7 range, both smartphones released may feature the curved display.

3. No Physical Home button

Samsung galaxy s8 bezel less

To help achieve the bezel-less design it is likely that Samsung may remove physical keys altogether from the front of the handsets, leaving users to rely on the virtual buttons on the screen. It is believed that the decision to get rid of the capacitive buttons will allow Samsung to reduce specific bezels at the bottom of the device.

4. 5.2 inch 4K Display

4k display for the samsung galaxy s8

With Samsung heavily pushing virtual reality, we would not be surprised to see powerful screen resolution on the device. Many leaks are pointing to  5.2-inch 4K-capable display (with a 2160 x 4096 resolution) enhancing the experience when paired with a Samsung Galaxy Gear and Google Daydream VR.

5. Power

Pocket Lint reported that the Galaxy S8 may pack a powerful punch thanks to a 3.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 processor and 6GB of Ram.

6. Scanners, Batteries and Mini Projector

Other rumours suggest the inclusion of a retina scanner, fingerprint scanner, wireless charging (of the possible 4200mAh mega battery) and even an inbuilt mini-projector so you can share your media with your friends in a more sociable setting.

7. Camera

samsung galaxy s8 camera

Previous rumours suggested a possible dual-lens camera for this device, but more up-to-date information leans towards the introduction of a massive 30 megapixel camera (with OIS) and an 8 megapixel selfie camera. Samsung are also likely to ditch unwanted camera protrusion, with a  rear camera that sits completely flush to the body of the handset.

8. Release Date

Samsung galaxy S8 MWC17

Whilst this piece of information has not been confirmed, it can be predicted quite easily. Since the release of the Galaxy S2, all Galaxy handsets have been announced at or around the time of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona. If this pattern continues, we can look forward to hearing concrete news late February this year.

Will the Samsung Galaxy S7 be joined by a Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge+?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

Rumours have been circulating about Samsung’s next flagship handset the S7, with the likelihood of an IP67 certificate, 5.7 3D touch display and a likely return to a Qualcomm processor.

Register your interest in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge to be the first with Pre-order opportunities.

We are also lead to believe that, as with previous releases, the S7 will not be alone. Early January 2016 twitter was blowing up when @evleaks (a well established mobile spec leak account) displayed a graphic showing a possible trio, including a Galaxy S7, a Galaxy S7 Edge, and a Galaxy S7 Edge+.

EVLEAKS S7 rumours

A series of leaks earlier this year mirrored the rumours of two extra dimentions, with a 5.5inch screen (with 73 x 151mm overall size) and a 7.5 inch device which is likely to be the Galaxy S7 Edge+ Phablet.

Similarly to the S7 we expect a downgrade from 16 mega pixel camera to a 12 mega pixel, with focus being placed on a Britecell sensor which will improve photography in low light settings. Samsung has also rumoured a dual-PD (dual-photodiode) technology to be featured on the S7 Edge and S7 Edge+ reassuring us that the drop in megapixels wont necessarily result in a drop in quality.

Other rumours surrounding the S7 Edge and Edge+ include improved fast-charging technology which may be wireless.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Specs, Rumours and Release Date

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

Rumours and spec leaks are flying across the virtual world. All eyes are on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S7, the next flagship phone from Samsung’s Galaxy S line. Word is that the handset will be released during Mobile World Congress at the end of February and we for one are extremely excited to see what Samsung are going to offer.

Register your interest in the Samsung Galaxy S7 to be the first for Pre-order opportunities.

Those in the know are suggesting that the Galaxy S7 will look very similar to the Galaxy S6, with Samsung just slightly tweaking the spec sheet and design features slightly. It has been suggested that the S7 will be constructed from a slim metal and glass build and will offer a IP67 certified dust and water resistant in a similar way to the Galaxy S5

S7 concept predicted design

Strong claims are also being made that the screen of the S7 will be a 5.7 inch display, with 1440 x 2560 QHD rather than 4K.  However others are stating a 5.1 inch screen with the same pixel resolution making us question whether there will be two S7s of varying sizes. Other rumours include the addition of a 3D Touch technology on the display (similar to that of the Apple iPhone 6s) and a curved/flexible screen.

The handset is likely to run on Android Marshmallow, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor (not the Exynos processor seen on the Galaxy S6). And we are hoping that the rumours of a microSD support are correct, as it will allow you much better control when expanding the predicted 32GB or 64GB memory.

qualcomm snapdragon 820 processor

Other reports claim that the S7 will appeal music lovers with a possible use of the SABRE 9018Q2M chip and a 32-bit mobile audio DAC. Photographers may want to research the handset a little further as it is rumoured that the S7 will drop down to a 12 megapixel camera. Emphasis is likely to be placed on increasing the sensor size from 1/2.6” to 1/2.0” and equipping the handset with dual-PD technology rather than increasing the megapixels. This would offer a more accurate auto focus through phase detection and better images in low light situations. A trademark application was filed by Samsung for ‘Britecell’ which is an image sensor for mobiles phones, leading us to think these rumours are correct.

Alongside the S7 we predict the release of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge/Edge+. (Stay tuned for the low downs on the S7 Edge & S7 Edge+.)
