What to expect from Super Mario Run for iOS

One of the big announcements for gamers at the Apple Event this week was the promise of Super Mario for iOS, coming to the App store in December this year. The iconic Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto (also responsible for Donkey Kong and Zelda series among many others) took to the stage in San Fransisco to introduce the new game, called Super Mario Run.

Why bring Mario to the Smartphone?

When interviewed after the event, Miyamoto cited his decision to move to the iPhone as a desire to keep the Mario games simple and appealing for everyone, even those who don’t game on consoles. Miyamoto had also noticed that the smartphone was “the first place this kids are encountering games” and so the company wanted to encourage parents to download the game for their children, thus expanding the game’s demographic even further.

So what can we expect from Super Mario Run?

The description is up on the App store already, describing a game that can be played with one hand. Gamers will navigate Mario through the courses using a variety of jumps. Your character’s behaviour will adapt depending on the timing of your taps, allowing you to gather coins and reach the goal.

Super Mario Run will run on three different gaming modes:
- The first mode features challenging courses for you to complete.
- In the second mode, you challenge the play data of other people’s completed courses. You compete to see who can finish the course with the most style!
- In the third mode, you can create your own Mushroom Kingdom using coins collected by playing the first two game modes.

Which handsets will be compatible?

The game requires iOS 8.0 or later.

You’ll be able to download the game on the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, as well as a selection of iPads and iPods.
