What is Google Assistant and how does it work?

Google Assistant is at the heart of the tech giant’s latest releases, the Google Pixel and the 5.5 inch Google Pixel XL. Taking on Apple‘s Siri and Microsoft‘s Cortana, the smart service was first unveiled at the Google I/O conference in May 2016, with the new virtual assistant pitched as a combination of the experience in Google Now and Google’s existing “Ok Google” voice controls.

What is Google Assistant?

Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, said he wanted people to experience “an ongoing two-way dialog” with Google Assistant that;

‘understands your world and helps you get things done. It makes it easy to buy movie tickets while on the go, to find that perfect restaurant for your family to grab a quick bite before the movie starts, and then help you navigate to the theatre.’

How does it work?

Google Assistant is embedded deep into the new two new Pixel handsets, which provide instant access to the VA from the home button. Long press on the home button and you enter the Google Assistant interface. Listening bars will then pick up your voice, transcribing what you say on to the screen. Google Assistant then delivers a spoken reply and results for your query. Navigation is also taken over by Google Assistant.

Pre-order the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL to experience Google Assistant for yourself.
