Will the iPhone 8′s ARkit give us a new world of AR?

Apple announced the ARKit at its annual developers conference earlier this summer, allowing app developers to draw on detailed camera and sensor data to map digital objects into 3D space. Whilst Apple are up against tough competition including Google’s ARCore, its vast customer base will almost guarantee Apple’s success in the Augmented Reality World.

We were given insight into what we can expect from Apple’s upcoming AR apps testers, as AR app developers gathered on Apple’s campus in Cupertino, Calif. yesterday to demo their work. Big brand including Giphy, Ikea, The Food Network, The Walking Dead and The Hungry Caterpillar were all in on the action.

So what can we expect from these Apps?

1. Ikea:

Allowing you to place up to 2,000 items from its current catalogue into your spaces before purchase.

2. The Walking Dead: Our World

A blood thirsty Pokemon for grownups, The Walking Dead: Our World will let you team up with members of the Walking Dead gang to take down the Walkers in your natural habitat.

3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Based on the children’s classic tale, The Very Hungry Caterpillar AR allows children to look after their own hungry caterpillar, interacting with the little guy by feeding, playing and keeping him safe until the transformation to butterfly happens. Cuteness overload.

4. Giphy World:

Allows you to place gifs in 3D space, share videos of them or even share the whole 3D scene in AR with friends who have the app

Register your interest in the Apple iPhone 8 to be first in line for preorders, rumoured to drop on September 12th.
