What’s new on the The BlackBerry KEY2?

Monday, June 11th, 2018

BlackBerry’s KEY2 has taken the mobile world by storm this weekend, with an unprecedented amount of preorders for a new release.

But if you’re wondering whether it’s worth updating last years KEYone to this already unbelievely popular device, read on.

How have BlackBerry updated the KEY2 handset?

Design

blog3

At quick glance, you’d be excused for thinking there were little to no design updates since the KEYone thanks to a continuation of the aluminium frame, touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. But look closer and you’ll noticed sleek refinements made to offer a modern look on the KEY2.

The KEY2 is slightly smaller, measuring in at 151.4 x 71.8 x 8.5mm and 168g.

The Keyboard is where the major changes lie, using a matte plastic finish with flatter backlit keys. The fingerprint scanner is located in the space key on the QWERTY layout and there’s a change of location for the convenience key.

A new key, the Speed Key, graces the KEY2, allowing you to create two key shortcuts for added speed and convenience.

Camera

The most exciting addition to the design is the dual camera sensors displayed on the rear of the handset. The KEYone offered a 12MP rear camera and 8MP selfie camera with 84 degree field of view.

The KEY2 steps up with a dual 12MP snapper on the rear, one with an f/1.8 aperture, the second offering an f/2.6 aperture with optical zoom.BlackBerry is using the secondary rear shooter as a telephoto zoom, similar to the iPhone X, and enabling portrait mode shots too.

The Selfie game hasn’t changed much, with the same 8MP camera that can capture 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

Display

There’s little updates here, with both devices housing a 4.5-inch IPS LCD touchscreen display with a resolution of 1,620 x 1,080.

Under the Hood

BlackBerry has updated most areas of the KEY2’s power, performance and battery life. The OS steps up from Nougat to Android 8.1 Oreo, with Android P on its way. The chipset is upgrade to  a Snapdragon 660 with 6GB RAM and 64GB internal memory. Slightly confusingly, the KEY2’s battery is technically smaller than the KEY1, but offers a more efficient use with a speedier Quick Charge 3.0.

BlackBerry fans will have tomorrow’s date firmly highlighted in their calendar as the date the BlackBerry KEY2 is finally launched. However, we wont have to wait overnight for an update on the iconic design.

Evan continued the BlackBerry leaks, throwing out a full spec sheet for the KEY2:

The classic keyboard has returned with new level of refinement, with a touch enabled 35 key design and integrated fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard.

According to Evan we can expect the dual cameras to both offer 12MP with dual tone LED flash, 4K video recording at 30 fps and Phase detect auto focus. The front camera is said to be an 8MP fixed focus selfie camera, with 1080p video recording at 30 fps.

We’re likely to see Android 8.1 Oreo as the OS, a Qualcomm SDM660 processor and a 3500mAh battery with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support.  Internal memory is rumoured to be 64GB or 128GB, with 6GB RAM and a micro SD card slot for expandable memory up to 256GB.

Watch the official BlackBerry KEY2 Teaser here.

Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

The official announcment of the BlackBerry KEY2 is just a fornight away and our VIP Preorder registration list is showing that this looks to be the release of 2018.

Specification speculations have been circling, but here’s what the teaser video confirm:

  • Dual Cameras:  We may not know the megapixel count, but the video shows the dual rear camera as being one of the newest updates on the KEY2.
  • The addition of a new key in the bottom right of the physical keyboard. This feature was originally seen on the Weibo leaks, and whilst the video does confirm the additional button BlackBerry aren’t giving away its function. Some suggest the key will launch an app drawer, others are suggesting it will be a remake of the BlackBerry Button found on the Bold and Curve phones.
  • The Keys appear to be flatter than the original KEYone, with increased spacing between the rows of keys, giving a modern update to the classic BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard.

Update for Android and iOS users of BBM for consumers

Friday, February 2nd, 2018

June 2016 saw a collaboration between BlackBerry and their trusted partner Emtek Group, working together to improve the BBM Consumer platform.

Emtek is a leading digital media content company with an impressive portfolio of television, web, and content production assets; CMW is Emtek’s subsidiary.

Emtek and blackberry

Offering a compelling ecosystem, investments, and technology resources to take BBM to the next level, BlackBerry licensed Emtek’s subsidiary Creative Media Works Pte Ltd (Co. Reg. No. 201609444E) the rights to develop and offer cross-platform BBM.

Since their partnership, BlackBerry has been gradually transferring certain aspects of the platform to CMW, such as development of the BBM application itself. To make this a seamless transition, BlackBerry will transfer your BBM Consumer data to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform.

Here’s some additional information from BlackBerry regarding the shift:

What is BlackBerry’s ongoing involvement in BBM Consumer?

BlackBerry owns 100% of BBM and has licensed the rights to BBM Consumer (i.e., the Android, iOS and Windows Phone versions of BBM) to CMW. BlackBerry continues to operate the BBOS and BlackBerry 10 versions of BBM, as well as BBM Enterprise (formerly BBM Protected). If you use these other versions of BBM, keep in mind that they are distinct from BBM Consumer and not affected.

What will CMW be doing?

As CMW takes over BBM Consumer operations, you can expect additional new BBM content and services, and continued improvement in your access to content and features to continually improve. CMW is committed to securing your information as set forth in these updated BBM Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. CMW has already included new security features such as Second Factor Authentication (2FA) for registration via e-mail or phone number.

What should I do if I prefer not to have my data transferred to CMW’s BBM platform?

If you prefer not to have your data transferred to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform, you may discontinue using BBM Consumer and close your account before February 26, 2018.
